Wearing of Travel Face Masks on Planes now Mandatory

With a gradual return to air travel now in sight, airlines are rolling out new policies designed to increase customer confidence aimed at protecting passengers and crew from corona virus transmission. Wearing Travel Face Masks when at the airport and during your flight is one of the new measures that has come into force.

With most major airlines now requiring passengers to wear face masks on flights to limit the spread of viruses, it is now mandatory to wear face masks for travel when getting on a flight from 1st May 2020 with the following airlines; Air Asia, Air Canada, Air France, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Emirates, Eva Air, Jet Blue, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, United Airlines and Wizz Air. Other major flag carriers and low-cost operators are expected to join shortly.

Checking of passengers' body temperature is also being gradually implemented at airports throughout the world ensuring passengers who exceed the temperature limit may not be allowed to fly. This temperature limit does seem to vary by country to country and currently ranges from 99.5 degrees to 100.4 degrees. In the US, from 1st June 2020, Frontier Airlines’ passengers and crew members will have to be temperature checked via touchless thermometer prior to boarding. Anyone with a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher will not be allowed on the plane.

Face Mask Protection

So why is wearing a face mask now mandatory when flying and what protection can they provide? The airlines and authorities know face masks protect you against air-borne germs and pollutants but also protect others near you from any mouth-borne germs that you may have. This can be hugely beneficial to an airline because passengers wearing travel face masks will not require the airlines to keep the middle seat free to keep social distancing measures on board. In fact, this is hugely expensive for airlines to maintain especially on high demand routes.

As countries begin to lift some of their lockdown measures and people return to work, there will soon be an upturn in demand for flying. Airports and airlines are gearing themselves up for this demand with measures designed to maintain personal protection and maintain social distancing measures.

Although widely recognised, travel face masks do not provide protection against Covid-19, they do bring a host of benefits to those wearing them.
